Rowing for Everyone: A Conversation with Tim Giarrusso of RCIR
In Episode 45 of the podcast, we sat down with Tim Giarrusso, co-founder of Rochester Community Inclusive Rowing (RCIR), for a conversation that stayed with us long after we stopped recording.
RCIR began in 2008 as a volunteer-driven rowing program built on a simple belief: rowing can be a powerful way to build confidence, connection, and community, especially for people who are often excluded from traditional sport spaces.
From the start, RCIR chose to do things differently.

As Tim explains in the episode:
- No one pays
- No one gets paid
- There are no memberships or fees
- The focus is on people, not performance
RCIR serves veterans, individuals with visual impairments, and people with developmental disabilities. But what stood out most wasn’t just who RCIR serves — it was how intentionally the organization has been designed.
Every decision comes back to the same question:
Does this create access and belonging?
That intention shows up in:
- A focus on sculling, rather than competition-driven rowing
- Volunteer-based coaching and support
- Programming that meets people where they are, not where they “should” be
Tim also shared how the RCIR boathouse has grown into a true community asset. In addition to rowing, the space is used for yoga, pickleball, and gathering together. It’s a place where people can show up, participate at their own level, and stay connected over time. Rowing isn’t treated as a short-term program — it’s something participants can return to for a lifetime.
One of the most powerful themes in this episode is how rowing, when stripped of hierarchy and pressure, becomes a tool for rebuilding confidence. Participants aren’t defined by speed or results. Instead, they discover steadiness, control, and capability — often in ways that carry far beyond the boat.
This episode isn’t just about rowing.
It’s about leadership, organizational design, and what happens when sport is built around people instead of performance metrics.
